The Origin of Hair Removal Craze
Today, more and more women are becoming obsessed with removing unwanted hair. Many women spend a considerable amount of money for unwanted hair removal in their quest to achieving silky smooth legs and arms, hairless underarms, or more attractive face. About 30 percent of women and 12 to 15 percent of men are very concerned with some aspects of their appearance. However, obsession with removing unwanted facial and body hair is fairly rare.
Even though the current hair removal craze was first felt by the public during the 20th century, men and women have been removing facial and body hair throughout history. In fact, the modern day’s fashionable hair removal techniques such as waxing, sugaring or threading were used by Middle-Eastern and Egyptian women thousands of years ago, while other hair removal techniques such as plucking with tweezers, shaving with razors and the use of depilatory creams can be dated just as far back, if not further, in history. The methods in removing unwanted hair have stayed basically the same over the passing of centuries, but the parts of the body involved have changed according to the trends.
During the 1920s many women became convinced by an ad campaign launched by the Wilkinson Sword Company which basically pointed out that hair in the underarm was unfeminine and unhygienic. As the hemlines of dresses rise above the ankles, many women living in the Western countries started removing hair on their legs.
